About Bartels Medical Associates

George T. Bartels, MD, FAAFP is a bariatric (obesity) medicine specialist and was one of the first physicians in Eastern North Carolina to become Board Certified in the field. After receiving a psychology degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he graduated from Duke University School of Medicine and did post-graduate residency at Tallahassee Regional Medical center. Dr. Bartels maintains a specialty medical practice serving Central and Eastern North Carolina dedicated to serving the needs of patients who are or have been obese or overweight. We maintain a very high level of professionalism and believe only in the best care. Dr. Bartels has served as a Delegate to the North Carolina Medical Society and serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

In the treatment of the disease of obesity, Dr. Bartels uses several modalities which always include diet and exercise and which can also include the use of medications when appropriate.

We have seen a wide range of patients from all walks of life. On one extreme we see patients who have been overweight in the past but who need help maintaining their weight. On the other extreme, we see people who are over 400 pounds above their ideal weight. Over the past eighteen years we have helped thousands of men and women lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off!
